Not one.
But now two Edisons.
In September 2022, both journalists and the public voted in great numbers for Jan van Duikeren’s ballad album Short Stories. There was no time, however to rest on his laurels and enjoy this for too long; a new album had to be finished. Sleeves had to be rolled up and work had to be done.
That is the Rotterdam mentality that so characterises Jan van Duikeren: playing in a way that is just out of this world but never blowing one’s own trumpet, so to speak. A combination, should we say, of Bep van Klaveren’s work ethic – you know who I mean, don’t you? – and the subtle swing of Clark Terry.
He is a much-requested sideman: thousands of people see the bubbly optimism in his trumpet playing every week, with the Concertgebouw’s Jazz Orchestra, the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Herman, Candy Dulfer and Di-rect. But what really drives Van Duikeren – and what has done so since he started out – is the intimacy of jazz. The raw adventure of funk. His own music.
That is why the stadium trumpeter will be coming to clubs and jazz festivals in 2023 with Fingerprint. The group – which he played with at North Sea Jazz in 2011 and which is hot in Japan – has undergone a change of band members. Van Duikeren also wanted to work with the visionary hip hop drummer/producer Salle de Jonge.
The resulting album is entitled Pleasure as usual (to be released in April 2023). This is not just any old safe instrumental album but rather a fiery mix of funk, jazz, gospel and hip hop. Sly Stone meets Weather Report meets Steely Dan meets J Dilla.

Journalisten en publiek stemden in september 2022 massaal op het ballad-album
Short Stories van Jan van Duikeren. Tijd om daarbij stil te staan had hij niet; er moest een nieuw album af. Mouwen opstropen en gaan.
Het is de Rotterdams mentaliteit die Jan van Duikeren zo kenmerkt: wel de sterren van de hemel spelen, maar zelf nooit te hoog van de toren blazen. Een combi van zeg maar, de werklust van Bep van Klaveren – die kent u toch zeker wel? – en de subtiele swing van Clark Terry.
Ja, hij is een veelgevraagd sideman: duizenden mensen zijn wekelijks getuige van het sprankelende optimisme in zijn trompetspel. In het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, het Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra, met Benjamin Herman, Candy Dulfer en Di-rect. Maar waar Van Duikeren het voor doet – vanaf het begin al – is de intimiteit van de jazz. Het rauwe avontuur van de funk. Eigen muziek.
Daarom komt de stadium trumpeter in 2023 met Fingerprint naar de clubs en jazzfestivals. De groep – waarmee hij in 2011 op North Sea Jazz speelde en succesvol is in Japan – veranderde wel van samenstelling. Van Duikeren zocht de samenwerking op met de visionaire hiphop-drummer/producer Salle de Jonge.
Het resultaat is het album Pleasure as usual (release april 2023). Geen braaf instrumentaal album maar een vurige mix van funk, jazz, gospel en hiphop. Sly Stone meets Weather Report meets Steely Dan meets J Dilla.
